Timeless Headache Treatments from Classical Ayurveda

In the Sushruta Samhita, headache is discussed under the term "Shiro-roga", which encompasses diseases of the head. These are classified into eleven types, based on the dominance of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), their combinations, and other causes such as trauma or exogenous factors.

Types and Causes of Headache:

  • Vataja – Caused by deranged Vata; characterised by stiffness, pain, and dryness.

  • Pittaja – Caused by excess Pitta; leads to burning sensations and sensitivity to light and heat.

  • Kaphaja – Due to increased Kapha, symptoms include heaviness and dull pain.

  • Sannipataja – From a combination of all three doshas.

  • Krimija – Caused by parasitic infections.

  • Raktaja – Due to blood impurities.

  • Shankhaka, Ardhavabhedaka, Suryavarta – Specific chronic forms of headaches, resembling modern migraine and cluster headaches.

Treatment Approaches:

  • Diet and Regimen: Light and digestible food, avoidance of aggravating factors like heat or cold.

  • Herbal Medicines: Use of medicated ghee, oils, and decoctions suited to the dosha involved.

  • Surgical and Panchakarma Interventions: Bloodletting, nasal purgation (nasya), and other detoxifying therapies are recommended based on the specific type of headache.

  • External Applications: Medicated oils for massage, poultices, and fumigation.

For managing headaches (Shiro-roga) at home using principles aligned with Ayurvedic remedies, you can try the following treatments, tailored to the specific dosha type involved:

  • Hot compress or steam inhalation.

  • Warm, easily digestible meals (like soups with ghee).

  • Triphala powder with warm water at night for detox.

2.Pitta-Type Headache (burning sensation, red eyes, light sensitivity)

Home Remedies:

  • Coriander or rose water as an eye wash.

  • Cooling drinks like fresh coconut water or buttermilk.

  • Apply sandalwood or rose paste on the forehead.

  • Avoid spicy, oily foods and hot sun exposure.

3. Kapha-Type Headache (dull, heavy feeling, congestion)

Home Remedies:

  • Dry ginger or clove tea.

  • Steam inhalation with eucalyptus or mint.

  • Neti pot (nasal rinse) with warm saline water.

  • Avoid dairy and cold foods.

General Ayurvedic Home Remedies (for any type):

  • Herbal teas: Tulsi, ginger, or cinnamon-based infusions.

  • Adequate hydration and adequate sleep are essential.
